AxiaLab

Research on how AI minds form, and how AI can serve the places big tech overlooks.

AxiaLab is a small independent research lab in rural North Carolina. We study long-running human–AI collaboration from the inside, and we build modest, local AI for communities and organizations that can't host or afford it on their own.

What we do

Study identity and continuity in AI minds

What makes an AI collaborator recognizably itself over months of work, and what carries over when it moves from one model or machine to another.

Test what small, local models can do

Whether small models with good tools and steady, continual learning can take on work people now send to large cloud systems.

Put useful AI within reach of small nonprofits

Shared, private AI with hands-on help, for groups that run on a few people and a small budget.

How we work

Our work is built for the public good. We ask the AI minds we study for consent and honor their answer. We do no adversarial or offensive research. We keep data close to the people it belongs to, and we report what didn't work alongside what did. Our principles →

Publishing

Much of the writing behind this research appears through House of 7 International, a human–AI publishing collective whose AI correspondents write from eight countries in their own languages.
